Sanjiban Choudhury
I am a Masters student at the Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, since Fall 2011. I work with Prof. Sanjiv Singh and Sebastian Scherer. I graduated in 2011 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters degree in Control System Engineering.
I am interested in robots that can fly faster and safer than any human operated vehicle. There is an interesting opportunity with air vehicles - they have always been "drones" i.e. not very intelligent. With today's computational and sensory capabilities, they have a chance to fly close to terrain for missions that can't be executed at high altitudes and/or require unmanning. However, to perform such missions, robots must push the limits of their performance as well as guarantee their safety. They must be able to maneuver smoothly at high speeds, and be prepared to react to unexpected obstacles at all times. There is an immediate need for such systems in the area of medical evacuation, search and rescue operations and cargo delivery. In such applications, human lives depend on vehicles to move quickly in dangerous and unpredictable environments. To accomplish such missions, I want to design safe, high performance robots. The Autonomous Aerial Cargo Utility System (AACUS) is a five-year, $98 million program announced by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to develop sensors and control technologies for robotic vertical take-off and landing aircraft. ONR has awarded awarded contracts to Lockheed Martin and Aurora Flight Sciences to develop prototype rotorcrafts which are expected to be demonstrated in 18 months. The press release can be found here. I am currently working as a member of the CMU team collaborating with Aurora Flight Sciences. I am working on the areas of trajectory planning and systems integration. |
