Hans Moravec's office on the CMU campus:

Hans' office is Newell-Simon Hall (NSH) 3111. It is behind Hamburg Hall, at 4800 Forbes Avenue. There is a parking lot behind Hamburg hall, and from there the NSH building is accessible via a bridge over a (dry) moat! My office is at the end of the right corridor past the big front doors. The corridor is locked after business hours, but there is a phone near the entrance: dial 8-3829 to get me. These days I'm often there Thursdays about 3pm to late night. (Other days I'm likely at our new startup company, SEEGRID, about 3 miles away. My phone number there is (412)731-7174x112 ) .

A campus map pointing out my office.

From outside the university, my phone number is (412) 268-3829 .

CMU campus from Pittsburgh Airport:

Carnegie Mellon's campus is located approximately five miles east of downtown Pittsburgh in a section of the city called Oakland. A variety of directions to Carnegie Mellon University are found on our School of Computer Science web page. Following are directions from the Pittsburgh international airport.

Taxi:

The cost should be about $40.

City Bus:

The Port Authority Transit of Allegheny County (PAT) operates the 28X Airport Flyer bus route. It costs only $2.25, but requires you to have the exact amount. It departs from the terminal lower level at a well-marked bus stop near baggage claim at the blue curb, and leaves every 20 minutes. Stay on until it reaches its last stop about one hour later. The last stop is Forbes avenue at Morewood, a half block from Hamburg Hall, on the other side of Forbes. PAT Customer Service, for schedule or problems, is (412) 422-2000.

Car:

Follow the signs on the Airport Expressway for Pittsburgh, this will take you to 279 North. Follow 279 North toward Pittsburgh through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and onto the Fort Pitt Bridge. Once on the bridge, stay in the far right lanes (you can exit from either of the 2 right lanes) and follow signs for 376 East/Monroeville to make the first right off the bridge. Take 376 East to Exit 5, Forbes Ave/Oakland. Then follow Forbes Ave.

Stay in the right-hand lanes, following Forbes 1.3 miles through the Oakland Business District/Univ. of Pittsburgh to campus. Note: Forbes becomes 2-way after the Cathedral of Learning (an enormous mock-gothic tower on your left). You'll soon cross over a tiny bridge (Exxon station on left), this is the Panther Hollow Bridge, you are now on CMU's campus.

If you arrive before 4pm, turn right into the parking garage immediately past the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue. There are metered spots in the garage. DO NOT PARK IN THE CMU GARAGE FOR THE WEEKEND - It is locked Friday night until Monday morning.

You can park almost anywhere on campus after 4pm and on weekends. The driveway behind Hamburg hall is convenient, and contains spots marked for visitors to the Robotics Institute.
