 Distributed SensorWebs

Distributed SensorWebs

The SensorWebs initiative develops and implements wireless technology for distributed sensing and actuation in horticultural enterprises. The heart of the sensor web is the "node", a low cost, self contained integration of radio and microprocessor that interfaces sensing and actuation devices. Networking software allows deployed nodes to automatically find each other and create paths to route data and command actuation. The result is an inexpensive, easily installed system that monitors environmental data and implements remote (or even automatic) actuation of sprinklers, fans, heaters, and other devices.

Additional Information

The first generation of sensor web technology was installed at Lancaster Farms in Suffolk, VA.in September of 2003. This deployment consisted of 18 nodes distributed over an area of approximately 10 acres. More recently, we have been using sensor networks for irrigation/fertigation control for nurseries, greenhouses, and greenroofs. We are also applying sensor networks in orchards. In all of these areas, we are working with growers and domain specialists to solve relevant problems.
